If your Marriage Goes Awry, Four Tips to Help You Financially Survive Divorce Court

By MCCLATCHY-TRIBUNE INFORMATION SERVICES

Unfortunately, divorce happens — often — these days, and when it comes, it usually hits your wallet and your kids the hardest. "Best Life" tells you what to do just in case someday you and your spouse agree your differences might be irreconcilable.

1. Keep an inheritance that a divorce lawyer can’t touch by getting the benefactor to give the assets to your children or in an irrevocable trust.
2. Think ahead. If your wife has a shopping habit, make sure she’s spending on her own plastic.
3.  Re-writing your will. Now, spouses are entitled to some things by law, unless you live in Georgia — the only state that allows you to cut your spouse out entirely. You can, however, insist your kids get the majority, and your spouse only gets what is legally coming to him or her.
4. Judges look at your habits in divorce proceedings, so if you have a track record of staying away from designer clothes, and instead save wisely for your kids’ college funds, you’ll likely get a judgment in your favor.
