Could Taking Divorce Off The Table Save Your Marriage?

Well, it works for Will Smith.

On Wednesday's episode of The View, Whoopi surveyed the women for their opinion on a statement made by actor Will Smith.  She said:

"Will Smith says that the secret to his successful marriage to Jada Pinkett-Smith is only one choice they have and he says that divorce just can't be an option. That's it; there's no other option. We're gonna be together one way or another so we might as well try to be happy."

The pro-marriage women on the panel - Elisabeth Hasselbeck and Sherri Shepherd - loved the idea, while Joy said it was "unrealistic" and Whoopi said that there were things that a spouse could do, that, for her, would be a deal breaker and not deserve a second chance.

I agree with Joy and Whoopi.  Sometimes a divorce is the only option, like if your husband beats you or steals from you, etc.  Like Whoopi said, certain things are unforgivable and are too severe to work through.

But I also agree with Sherri, who said that divorce is sometimes brought up too much in a marriage.  Spouses fling the word at each other like a weapon; they use it as a threat, which also isn't good.

What do you guys think: could just taking divorce completely off the table and making it NEVER an option be a GOOD thing?

You know, I never brought up divorce until this year.  I've done way too much, stepped on way too long, and now, I've had enough.  It takes two to tango, and my husband just doesn't want to tango anymore... therefore, divorce is most diffidently evident.

Exactly. I think what Will Smith meant - not to put words in his mouth - is that that's what works for THEM, because they know each other and neither of them is going to do anything off-the-wall crazy, like beat up the other one, or come out of the closet, or like become addicted to drugs.  For other couples, that might not work!

I think it can be good, but as the saying goes, it takes two to tango....

if your spouse suddenly goes "off the deep end" (hey, it happens) and does stuff beyond the pale, why should they get an automatic free pass?
