Giving Yourself Breathing Space

Most relationship therapists advise that anyone suffering from a breakup or a recent divorce, should wait before allowing themselves back into a relationship.

They do not give a specific or set amount of time for you wait before this happens. This might seem like common sense, but for some people, when their heart is hurting they would like to ease the pain by falling (quickly) in love again. I wonder why this is so?

There could be numerous reasons for this. The pain of their recent divorce might be clouding their minds to have quickly their new relationship is moving, or they can feel afraid by the thought of being alone without someone to care for them.

If they are still attached emotionally to their ex, then getting into another relationship too quickly has the potential to ruin this new relationship.

Relationship therapists state that taking a break between relationships is a good way for anyone to look at what went wrong in the last relationship, and to think what they would like to improve in future relationships.

This "breathing space" gives you a chance to learn more about yourself and what qualities you would like any future person to have.

I know why I would run to another relationship --- it would have been JUST to get some self-worth back.  Then it dawned on me that he was a fool to leave me and I don't need a man to give me any worth.

I don't mind being by myself - for me it was being tossed aside.  I don't really feel that lonely.  It is more when I have things I have to do that are a PITA that he would have helped with before.  But I can hire that out.

I have never had the best self-image so being "replaced" by someone so much younger was quite a blow.  So the idea of having someone tell me I was great was enticing.  But my brain won out and I kept that need silenced.  Thank god because it ended.
