California Legalizes Gay Marriage
And I say amen to that. I never really understood why it is so controversial for people. If you don't believe in gay marriage, don't have a gay marriage. Seriously, why do people care so much what other people do and who they love? If two people want to publicly claim their commitment and love for each other, I say go for it. It's not like heterosexual couples have such a great track record with upholding the "sanctity of marriage". Divorce rates are through the roof and infidelity has been commonplace in marriage for centuries. Who knows, maybe having gay couples marry will improve the statistics of successful marriages a bit!
I actually don't think that the government should recognize marriage at all since it is a religious institution. I think the state should only recognize civil unions and that religious institutions can choose to recognize or not recognize, perform or not perform, marriages. This is the same position as Christy Todd Whitman, former Republican Governor of New Jersey and a former head of the EPA under George W. Bush, by the way.
I believe that marriage can be a beautiful way to commit yourself to someone you love. And having failed at love many times, I can only say good for you to people that find it and feel a little envy, but also hope that it is possible. It truly doesn't matter to me if they find it with someone of the same sex or a different sex, as long as they find it with someone that loves them back and treats them with respect and kindness.
Change can be difficult, but it seems to me that affording people more rights and more opportunities to make a serious commitment to a partner can only be a good thing. Two people so in love that they desparately want to marry? Gay or straight, we should all be so lucky as to have that in our lives!
