The Vegas Divorce

It's funny. A couple can fly out to Vegas for a weekend and practically get hitched at the airport, it's so easy. No waiting period, no blood tests, no questions. The marriage license bureau used to be open 24/7 (it has recently scaled back the operating hours just a bit) and there are Elvises waiting on every corner, eager to marry off just about anyone.

The thing with these Vegas weddings is, many of them ultimately end in divorce. (Especially those drunken-strangers-met-in-a-bar ones, but that's another blog entirely!) Unfortunately, you can't just hop a JetBlue back down here to get divorced as quickly as you got married.

Nevada has pretty standard divorce laws. There is no such thing as the "quickie" Vegas divorce. Actually, getting married here alone doesn't even qualify a couple to get a divorce here: you must have been a Nevada resident for a period of at least six weeks prior to filing. Hmph! They sure don't make it easy, do they?

Like every other place, you file for a defined reason. The papers move through the courts, slow as ever. Custody gets hashed out, assets divided (Nevada is a community property state). If you plan to get a divorce in Vegas, prepare to stay awhile. I hear the Bellagio is hiring busboys!
