Churches
in Hardin County Kentucky are drawing together to create a Community Marriage
Covenant. It's a cross denominational platform whose sole purpose is to curb
the divorce rate.
Organizers
define the Community Marriage Covenant as, "a set of agreed-upon
guidelines for premarital preparation and community support for marriages. Its
purpose is to empower couples for healthy, lifelong marriages and to raise the
standard of two-parent families within the community.”
Since
75 percent of the county's marriages take place in the church, the Christian
community decided it would be a good idea to unite and save the marriages they
created. Part of the covenant will
include counseling and mentoring from pastoral staff, and couples who have
stayed together for a long time.
Churches will get together and sign the covenant on the courthouse steps
on April 11th.
This
outreach to married couples will be open to Christian and non-Christians
alike. With divorce rates being what
they are, the tools to a healthy marriage are needed by everyone. As one
counselor put it, “The more resources we have available to us, the better.”
