I’ve been doing some research for LifetimeTV about what makes single moms so hot, and nothing would bring me more joy than to climb on top of little soap box today to tell you why.
But I’m kind of biased.
So, I’ve contacted a few experts — in order to ask them what makes single moms so “dateable.”
“Single moms are significantly more self-sufficient than other women I’ve dated,” says Jorge Fitz-Gibbon, a staff writer at The Journal News in White Plains, NY
Jorge frequently blogs about raising his a 10-year-old son in an amicable relationship with his ex. He also has a single-mom girlfriend with a 3-year-old son.
While he agrees that self-sufficiency “can intimidate some men,” Jorge says that he finds “it to be an attractive quality, and it makes for a more balanced relationship where both partners carry their own weight in significant ways. Besides, who wants a needy partner anyway, whether or not they’re parents?”
Single moms have “no time for games,” adds Peter Ehrlich, founder of Single Parent Love Life and a columnist at the Toronto Star.
“Games take time and when you’re a single parent, time is too valuable and precious,” says Peter.
Jorge agrees. “This is easily one of the qualities of a single mom that I find the most attractive,” he says. “One of the things I dreaded the most about dating again was the ‘game’ associated with it. It didn’t take long to figure out that the rules of the game didn’t really apply with most of the single moms I met.”
“Now, I don’t necessarily mean that in a sexual way,” Jorge adds. “I mean, I love a quick roll in the sack as much as the next guy. But it’s more about a directness when you ask for what you want, like what you expect from my companionship, what appeals to you or doesn’t, and all the way down to more mundane questions like what movie to rent for a rainy night indoors. It’s a sexy quality, and one I find lacking in most people in general.”
Of course, single moms like us love to play games… but we’ll stick with Twister and Monopoly, right?
Peter brings it all down the basics. “It’s primal. Single moms are child-bearers, and that’s very sexy. It’s so primitive: men love hips and asses.”
I’ll give single mom expert Ellie Slott Fisher– author of the soon-to-be-published Dating for Dads: The Single Father’s Guide to Dating Well Without Parenting Poorly (Bantam Dell, Jan. 2008) — the last word here:
“All I can say is… thank God men love hips and asses.”
