My daughter is off with friends for the next few days, so I have an unplanned, unstructured weekend ahead. Something that many find exciting and others find daunting. So here are some ideas of things to do when you have a weekend alone:
- Volunteer somewhere, a soup kitchen, a homeless shelter, an animal shelter. Get out and do something that feels like contributing
- Go to the movies. With or without friends. Seeing a movie alone can be envigorating. Once I went to see a movie alone and saw a very famous, beautiful actress sitting in the audience, also alone. We gave each other a smile because for that moment, we understood each other.
- Get lost in a book
- Catch up on a TV show you've never seen. Surfthischannel has every episode of everything!
- See friends. Reach out, don't wait for them to come to you
- Dust off the camera and go out and shoot some pictures
- Take a class - yoga, dance, photography, cooking, meditation. Maybe even something you wouldn't ordinarily do.
- Get lost. If the weather is nice, set out in the morning with a water bottle, some sunscreen and a hat and start walking. See where you end up and what you experience along the way, just make sure you have a phone and some cab money.
- Get in the car and go somewhere. Now I am not a big advocate of unnecessary driving, but heading to someplace different for a day or an overnight can really shake things up.
- Do a project you've been putting off; cleaning the garage, washing the floors, rearranging the furniture. Changing your space can change your outlook and actually finishing something can give a great sense of accomplishment
- Sit in a cafe with a journal and write. I like to make up stories about the people I see around me.
- Enjoy yourself!
