Shanghai
is finding some success in their new divorce program. They're offering counseling services to
divorcing couples. So far, the results
have been positive.
According
to the official report, 313 marriages have been saved by volunteer
psychologists. The program is voluntary,
and couples who wish to participate are offered free counseling and information
on keeping their divorce civil if they should decide to proceed.
Marriage
office director Zhang Zhiping says,
"One function of the sessions is to calm impulsive couples and stop
them from quarreling, help analyze the real reasons for their divorce and
develop a way to help save their marriage,"
The
real test will be how well the service does over time, and whether couples
return later for divorce.
