Because
of States like New York questioning their current divorce laws, ideas like
"No Fault" (or unilateral)
divorce are back in the news. Social
groups rally around both sides of the issue making statements and muddying both
sides of the issue.
The
church of course has an interest in the state of marriage and divorce. They'd prefer that no fault divorces didn't
exist at all. This is despite the data
that shows domestic violence is lower in states with unilateral divorce. They also show lower numbers of married women
committing suicide.
On
the other hand, there are sociologist who say "no fault' isn't the panacea
people expect. One study in California
shows that women's standard of living dropped 70 percent after divorce while
men's rose 40 percent. There is some
question as to the validity of this study though.
No
matter which side you fall on, divorce is a painful venture, that nobody goes
into a marriage looking for.
