my son started school today. he's in pre k.
new school. new teacher. new kids. new everything.
it was a very big day for him...and just like for my daughter (who started on monday), i made a big to-do out of it.
- all the usual new clothes and new school supplies.
- special wake up alarm bell just for him.
- big breakfast of his choice.
- huge welcome to first day of school sign when he woke up.
- a Wall E gift set on his bed.
- special hidden notes in his snack and lunch bags (with another little gift).
- his papa (grandfather) joined us and we took pictures and introduced him around to the other boys (cuz girls are icky).
- his all time favorite foods and snacks packed away for him today.
- his favorite blanket.
- when he gets home tonight, we'll have a big first day of school celebration dinner (his choice).
his father didn't show. didn't call. didn't even know it was his first day of school...(even though i've told him).....he thought it was yesterday (it wasn't), and when he talked to him last night on the phone, he asked him how was school.....(clueless!) my son just walked away from the phone. sad.
he didn't even mention that he would not be there for his big first day. nothing.
yet, he was there on monday for his daughters first day.
while driving to school this morning, my daughter turned to my son and said, 'why didn't daddy come for your first day?"
he just shrugged his shoulders.
i tried not to cry.
made me remember what he said to me a few years ago about our kids...his words "you know, i have a favorite."
