A
17 year old shop worker in the UK is trying to get a divorce, but can't without
the consent of her husband. The problem
is, her husband needs her to get back into the country on a visa.
According
to Claire Given, Shafiq, is the cousin
of the owners of the shop where she works.
She'd met Shafiq once, and when he was getting deported, she agreed to
help him get back into the country.
She
told her mom She was taking a trip to Glasgow, instead she went to Pakistan to
get married. She was paid £100. When she came back, Safiq kept calling her
and telling her to go to the immigration office, to say how she couldn't live
without him. Finally she stopped taking
his calls, and got a lawyer.
Now
she wants a divorce, but because of the situation, the proceedings are tricky.
He says, "I will investigate the possibility of an annulment but I think
that she can only apply for a divorce under Scottish law which cannot be
granted without the husband's consent until after two years separation. It's an
outrage. She has basically been used as bride for rent."
