County Minnesota is trying a new divorce program and everyone is pitching
in. This will be their fist attempt at a
program that tries to settle divorce disputes before they get to court.
The
idea of the program is to get both spouses together and hammer out the division
of assets and custody issues. It is a
similar program to collaborative divorce, but still has a few differences.
Right
now one of the differences is the volunteer nature of the program. Many county
employees and judges are pitching in and giving their time to make it
work. Even lawyers have adjusted their
pay scale while the program starts up.
This appears to be a community effort.
If
it works, it could save couples plenty of court time. Saved court time could help everybody come
out of the divorce a little bit better, because the longer it takes for a
divorce to finish up, the more everybody loses.
