Drama Geek and I spent the day yesterday up north. I had been invited by a friend to speak to a group of patients at a medical facility up there, and then to join my friend for dinner.
The entire drive up was surreal to me. This is not something I could have ever pictured Mr. Ex doing. My consulting in the medical field was always “my thing” as far as he was concerned and never had anything to do with him. On the rare occasions he would join me, I’d spend the entire trip thanking him profusely for sacrificing his time to support me or keep me company.
Yet with Drama Geek, I had no compulsion to offer apologies, no anxiety over having him see me in a role much different than his daily experience with me. In fact, when the invitation was presented, I accepted on behalf of the two of us without even consulting with him first. It just felt natural that he would join me on the trip.
And the best part of all? He truly enjoyed himself. He offered me great insight into the group and some various dynamics he saw among the patients. He also gave me valuable feedback on the effectiveness of my contributions to the group and how my delivery was received by the individuals – medical professionals and patients alike.
It was a fabulous experience…I can’t believe what I’ve been missing all these years.
