Tom and Patty knew each other 17 years and were married for almost 11. Last February they filed for divorce, and the still love each other.
In December, Tom received an operation for breast cancer. The doctors removed a stage 3 tumor, and 11 lymph nodes. Tom had just started a retail job, and wasn't insured yet. He wouldn't receive insurance now either since the cancer was a preexisting condition. With medical bills mounting, the couple turned to Medicaid.
They didn't qualify. As a couple they made too much money. So, in order to afford the existing bills and the continued chemotherapy, Tom and Patty divorced. As a single person, Tom now qualifies for Medicaid coverage.
The couple lives in different homes, but spend as much time together as possible. Tom will finish his last round of chemo this week, and find out if he's truly out of the woods.
When asked about his situation, Tom says, "It's just surreal."
