Seeing Divorce Attorney for fist time today? Any advice?

My husband was just recently made aware of me seeking divorce for multitude of reasons.  I am nervous about my first meeting with my attorney today.  My husband has also been pressuring me into planning a 4th of July mini vacation for us and our three children, what do I do?

If you are going to see a lawyer you need to tell your husband that you are going to divorce him. You need to do that now and not go on vacation. That will complicate things and your kids (don't know their ages) will be even more devestated when you tell them you are divorcing their father. Because the vacation will be fun and they will not undertand you blowing up Mayberry soon after the vacation.

First of all, ask questions about their experience.

Make sure that you feel comfortable with his/her answers.

If money matters than, which it usually does, ask how they charge.

Most will have hourly rates.  Ask how they round their time.  Some charge in 15 min, 20 min, or 30 min intervals.
Also, ask if you'll be charged at the regular hourly rate even if the paralegal will be doing work.  I get charged a lot less/hr for work that the paralegal does for me.  My STBX gets charged at the regular rate even if the paralegal is doing the work.

If you don't want to be charged by the hour, many will charge a lump sum to handle your case from start to end.

Finally, know how/when your attorney expects to be paid.

I'm sure others here will have some additional advise.  I think it may help to talk to someone that has recently had to hire an attorney.

divorce is a confusing time, but don't let a vacation blur the bigger picture here....you're planning on divorcing!  right?  is this the first he's heard about it?  before you see your lawyer, you need to read the many, many articles on this site about how to prepare, what to ask, etc.  go with a friend...because believe me...what you think you heard, and what was said...are sometimes two different things.
