Do You Confront Your Ex for Saying Something Hurtful to Your Child?

When your ex says something hurtful to your child, do you try to discuss it with them, or do you just focus on helping your child deal with it? I tend to just focus on helping my daughter deal with it, but he was such an idiot today (see my journal entry My Ex is Such an Idiot) that I am tempted to call and try to talk to him about it.

My daughter is 14, and already she doesn't want to spend time with him. He seems to make it especially unpleasant any time I go away with my boyfriend like I did for 2 nights this weekend. It's ridiculous, we've been divorced for 12 years and he was the one that cheated on me! As far as talking to him goes, sometimes he can be adult and sometimes, like he demonstrated this weekend, he can have a hair trigger temper and be completely irrational. Probably best to spend my energy on helping the girls realize that his words came from his own experience which isn't indicative of what their experience will be.

How old is your daughter?  Is she old enough to understand that is being difficult and hurtful.  Focus on the relationship with your daughter.  Eventually he will say too much and she will choose not to be with him at all.  Let him shoot himself in the foot.

I guess it depends on your relationship with your ex. My ex refuses to even talk so resolving problems is difficult. Some ADULTS can have respectful conversations even after a divorce........emphasis on adults.
