California just repealed the ban on gay marriages. In as little as a month, same sex couples will be able to get married on the west coast. This makes California, and Massachusetts the only two states that allow gay marriages. Is there a difference?
Actually there is. The primary difference is in who can get married. Massachusetts only allows residents to get a marriage license. So long as you have a Massachusetts address, you can get married. California doesn't care, they'll marry anybody.
Massachusetts requires a 3 day waiting period for the license, California doesn’t. The cost of a license in Massachusetts can be cheaper. The cost varies from county to county. It can be as cheap as $4 and up to $50. California will cost at least $45 but can cost more depending on the county.
The one similarity between the two: If you plan on leaving the state, your marriage license can become invalid. Other states don't honor same sex marriages. And even harder on the same sex couple, is the fact that states that don't honor the marriage, don't recognize a divorce, leaving couples with little to no divorce rights.
