In the US courts decide child custody based on several key elements: best parent, best stable environment, etc. Although not perfect, the courts do try. By Islamic law, custody goes to the father when children reach nine years old, period.
It gets even trickier for a foreign born wife. If a woman moves to Saudi Arabia to live with her husband, then divorces, she loses her sponsor, and can be deported. Her children, on the other hand, are natural citizens: no matter what age, they stay with their father.
In marriage, you always want to make sure you're marrying the right person, but if your future relies on another country's standard of laws, it's best to fully understand those laws before you say "I do."
