tjr divorce

My husband left the country for three years and I was unable to obtain my divorce because when the papers were sent the certified mail card was not returned. I then found out that he was back in NC working which is where I live. I then as my attorney to ammend my divorce papers to request alimony. She is now asking for an additional amount of money. I paid $400 for the divorce and $200 for the papers to be ammended. Now she wants to dismiss the original case and file a new one and is asking for an additional $500. So I need to know if the divorce petition be ammended prior to service of the defendant? She is saying that too much time has passed for her to handle the divorce without additional money. I don't think this is fair since I originally paid for the divorce and gave money to her for the ammendents to be made.
