Pay

After divorce papers are filed , can either party run up bills that both would be obligated to pay?

that depends on the state you live in and/or how your divorce papers were drawn up.

some states require specific wording regarding marital debts be included in documentation to ensure the integrity of finances otherwise it can be a bit of a free for all.

as lori suggested - all joint accounts.debts should be changed as a precaution.

I dont believe so but I would cancel anything that is in both of your names or get your name taken off the account. Its for your own safety.

Legally, I'm not sure. Not being responsible for the others debt is specifically spelled out in my separation agreement. I would think once you have your divirce papers you could take your name off of previous join accounts and open up new ones with just your name that your ex would not have access to. But again, I'm not a lawyer so I don't know for sure.
