It's hard to stay together. Sometimes the pressure gets too much and marriages fall apart. That's why it's good to see a couple stay together even when everybody says they should divorce, including the government.
In July of 1967 Mildred and Richard Loving were roused from their bed by a Virginia sheriff. By being married, they were breaking the law. Mildred was black, Richard was white, and The state of Virginia would not allow an interracial marriage within their borders.
The couple was ordered by the court to either divorce, or leave the state for no less than 25 years. Mildred took her case to the supreme court, and the 17 states with interracial marriage laws on the books were forced to revoke them.
Despite their role in civil rights, the Lovings lived a quiet existence. In 1975, Richard was killed by a drunk driver. Last Friday, the couple reunited when Mildred, 68, passed due to pneumonia. It's good to see marriage beat the odds every once and a while.
