Divorce lawyers can be expensive. In an antagonistic divorce, you can increase those fees by arguing more in court. Lawyers charge for court time, and just like everybody else, they want to be paid.
One Australian woman found a way to pay her bills, and now she's in court (once again) defending it. Jodie Power told Australia's Channel 7 that her "friend" Mercedes Corby was involved in drugs. Corby's brother is currently serving a 20 year sentence in Bali for drug smuggling. When Channel 7 offered Power $100,000 cash for her story, she took it.
"My husband and I were going through a bitter divorce and custody battle, family law, and I had to pay my solicitors," Power told a court today. She and Channel 7 are being sued by Corby for defamation of character.
Power also testified that although part of her reason for telling the story was for the money, she also did it because she wanted the truth to be revealed. Whether or not her story holds up, it does show the financial strain of divorce, and the things people will do to get money, and not just from their estranged spouse.
