Providing for my children's future in a divorce settlement

I want to know all the provisions for which i should ask in a divorce concerning my children's future...should it be worded that he will buy them a car at the age of 16?  Should it be worded so he pays for their college until a 4-year degree is earned? What else should be in the agreement for their future?  Please give me your advice, thanks...

a car is a luxury not a right - and it is something a child should earn, not just have handed to them, nor should a parent be forced to pay for.

you can't expect your stbx to foot the bill for everything - college should be split, and the child should be encouraged to do well in school to earn scholarships. You should open up college funds for the children and have a set amount each parent contributes per month.

you can require your stbx to cover the children under his health insurance and split the cost of anything not covered.

don't turn your ex into a walking wallet for the kids' future, their upbringing is 1/2 your responsibility.

In chatting with others, it seems to be not uncommon to negotiate now who will pay what of the expenses children have as they get older (and that the parents would normally share together if they were married and could afford it).

It seems like college and weddings seem to be the most common, although a friend told me he has promised to pay for his child to travel (!!) after college.

that would have been nice!

if your soon to be ex is in a financial position to promise this, i'd take it!
