We all give up something when we get married, some more than others. Some people move to a foreign country for the ones they love. Stripped away from their home and foundation, it can put added strain on the marriage.
For women who give up their lives to move to Muslim countries, they're not only making big sacrifices, they're taking a large risk. If the marriage falls through, Muslim courts favor the husbands. Many stories exist of divorced women left with nothing.
This is one reason U.K.'s Mishcon de Reya firm has opened an office in Dubai. They want to help expatriates get fair legal counsel in family court. In many instances, wives don't know the local laws and are confused and overwhelmed.
One of the things husbands can do is get a travel ban. This keeps a mother from taking her children out of country. For a mother with no bonds in the country other than her ex-husband this can be traumatic.
The important thing is the same as with any other marriage: be sure what you're getting into. If divorce is eminent, make sure you get representation from somebody who knows the law and can defend you. It may be costly, but if there are children involved, it may be worth it.
