what is a next of friend?

Ok, I was looking into what is going in friends divorce on his request on the internet. And it said that she filed and was approved for their childrens "next of friend". My question is what is that? and is it going to hurt his chances of getting joint custody of their children? I don't understand what this is, and he is going to want me to know what this is when I tell him about it. Please help me....

it's also known as a Guardian ad Litem - in other words, the person is an attorney that looks after the best interest of the children - an evaluator that puts their opinion in on custody to the judge and it is weighed with all of the other evidence.

It doesn't matter who's side asks for it.

so, is this going to hurt his chances at getting joint custody? And why didn't his lawyer come up with the idea first? Isn't that something that he shoule have suggested?

When an individual is unable to look after his or her own interests or manage his or her lawsuit, the court would appoint a person to represent that individual's legal interests. In court terminology this person is called a next friend. Individuals requiring a next friend included minors, persons who were mentally ill or mentally retarded, infirm or senile persons, and others whose disabilities prevented them from managing their affairs. So basically, An individual who acts on behalf of another individual who does not have the legal capacity to act on his or her own behalf.
