Question

ex hasn't paid child support in a year...

he was unemployed and now he's working again.  any chance of the courts ordering him to pay back what he owes for the past year?  or is this a lost cause?  oh, he's also self-employed, so that adds in another layer of confusion, right?

If you are not already collecting child support through state enforcement, I highly suggest it.  They will keep a tab of what he owes so that you will not be burdened with calculating it. (You will only have to keep good records of child care and extra curricular  expenses for school and sports and bill him monthly).
Now that you ex is working you can take him to court so that court ordered support and arrears can be automatically deducted from his pay.
My ex tried to convince me to allow him to give me personal checks but I did not consent to that and I am glad I didn't because he is the type not to meet his obligations on his own.  For a period he was not paying and he was in arrears, the New York State courts had ordered him  to pay or they would suspend his license(s).  Let just say he can't drive legally anymore.  The next license to go is his professional one, which I am a little more heistant to allow them to suspend for financial reasons.
