Wedding Ring Coffins: Good Release or Bad Taste?

It's customary for high end service providers to give their clientele gifts as a thank you. Some mortgage brokers might give gift baskets, and a lawyer give spa gift certificates.  One Atlanta divorce Attorney gives ring coffins.

These aren't just cheap boxes either. These are six-inch long, black velvet lined, mahogany resting places with gold accents. When Attorney Melody Richardson saw them she said, "Must have. Must have! I just thought they were hysterical."

She's since handed them out to a few of her clients, but she is particular about who gets them. Ms. Richardson says she sent one to a woman who, "has a fabulous sense of humor but is still grieving."

We all grieve differently. That's part of why divorce parties are seeing a boom now.  How far is  too far?  Like the divorce itself, that's for your heart to decide.

I love a good divorce party and have planned a hosted a few. In my area, it's common to host one as a bachelor/bachelorette party in reverse. They function almost as a coming-out party of sorts -- a reintroduction to the life of the swinging single. But my personal favorite are the parties that focus not on the failure of a marriage but on the fresh start divorce can provide. Rather than bitter or snarky in tone, those "new beginning" parties focus on the promise of a future lived with valuable lessons learned.

As for ring coffins, I'm not sure how I feel about that. Part of me thinks it enshrines the most notable symbol of your failed marriage as if it were the holy grail. Why devote time and energy to focusing on the past? The other part of me, like the attorney you quoted, thinks it's a great way to poke fun at an otherwise somber, stressful occasion.
