Is Divorce Too Easy?

Some say that divorce is too simple, and people are allowed to divorce at the drop of a hat. Australia has just made their divorce aplication available online.

The new form still asks the same questions, but uses handy pop up windows to help filers complete the form. People who have used it say it is quicker and easier.

The new application isn't without it's opponents though. Australian Family Association Queensland president Mark Holzworth believes the new forms are an easy out. ""It's an unfortunate reflection of the times in which we live that these things could be so extraordinarily convenient as to perhaps make people rush to that kind of action," he said. "I think sometimes the cold hard document in front of us . . . causes us to reflect a little more, think a little deeper."

No matter how much "deeper" the forms make people think, the latest figures suggest that about one-third Australian marriages end in divorce. So the old way didn't seem to stop them from getting divorced. The figures on the online application still aren't available.

Actually, depending on how you go about it, the beginning process can be quite simple. In some states you don't even need time to think about it, you can "Get a divorce" on a whim. The problem is, that it's all the other stuff, the things that happen once you set the wheels in motion that make it difficult. All the things that nobody can take back, but will haunt you forever. That's what's difficult about divorce, and maybe that's what the people who say "Divorce is easy" are talking about. It's The ease at which we can set ourselves up for the pain that follows.

I don't know. I actually agree: There's nothing easy about divorce.

There is nothing easy or simple when it comes to divorce.
All the tears, pain, hurt, anger, fear, the why's etc etc. Online filing forms just makes it that much more impersonal.

I can't imagine anyone in their right mind thinking getting a divorce was an easy thing. I suppose they're out there. Once you figure out the kids, money, house issues, you still have the emotional baggage to drag around. I doubt online forms are going to do anything except make one tiny thing in the process easier. Thank goodness, that's all I can say.
