Is Divorce An Offence Against God?

The pope spoke out at a Catholic Congrees for Marriage and the family this weekend. His focus? The "choices" of divorce and abortion.

The Pope is concerned about the rising rate of worldwide divorce.  Several countries that used to outlaw divorce have (such as Spain) have made it a legal option within the past few years, and other places (such as the Phillipines) are considering it.

In his speech, the Pope said, "They are serious offences... which violate human dignity, inflict deep injustice on human and social relations and offend God himself, guarantor of conjugal peace and origin of life."

He did also warn the church against wrongful treatment of people who have gone through a divorce. "Divorce and abortion are choices... which sometimes develop in difficult and dramatic circumstances... and are a source of profound suffering for those who take such decisions." He continued by telling the church they should treat these people with "love and delicacy."
