In Israel some women who request a divorce from their husbands are forced, by law, to stay married. The wife is bound to the marriage and usually blackmailed by the husband before he'll let her go.
According to Rabbinical Law, both husband and wife need to sign a divorce decree before it's finalized. In a country like Israel, the religious courts hold more power than civil courts, and only Rabbinical courts can grant a Jewish divorce (a get).
The problem is, frequently the husband refuses to sign the document until the wife pays him a specified amount, or gives up certain assets. Recently, wives had tried going to civil courts to force the husband to sign quicker. Now Rabbinical courts are saying that a coerced signature is invalid. That the only way to get an approved divorce is through Rabbinical court. This means husbands can hold out indefinitely.
Until something is done, wives are trapped in marriages with no way out.
