I am in Los Angeles and so far the bills from my attorneys amount to almost $30,000 and we are just going in for an Order to Show Cause.  If spouse is setting up obstacles,  it can be a nightmare.  If you can get mediation and spouse is acting sane you will save so much pain and money.  I have even had to put a lien on the house.

You've got two answers on that ... they show you that it all really depends on how much of the paperwork would you be able and feel confortably with filling up yourself... there is plenty of sites that offer a low cost filling and support you during the process... but if your divorce is not amicable... it may not work.

Well, when I got divorced it cost me nothing...because I did it myself.  I went to the courthouse and requested a divorce but did not have money to pay for one.  And requested that I file it on my own. So, it costed me nothing.
