Joint Physical & Legal - I am being told I will have to pay CS

My STBX and I have filed the paperwork stating that we are splitting joint and Physical custody.  We each have the two children 50% of the time (4 nights one week and 3 the next).  I am currently on unemployment in this great state of Michigan, and she has a full time job.  She currently is receiving state aid (WIC and the kids are on medicaid).  She has been told by the court that she HAS to go thorugh Friend of the court and that I HAVE to pay child support to her.  Currently, she is making 2x what I make in a month.  I have absolutely no money to hire a lawyer.

How is this even feasible?  I am just barely able to pay my rent and supply my kids with food.  As much as I hate to do it, do I have to file for state aid as well to negate this?  I am very confused as to why I would be forced to pay her Child Support when a) She is making twice as much as I am, and b) We have exactly 50% custody.

Your CS will be based on what you make  - if you are on unemployment it will be a percentage of that. It may raise your ex's income above the level where she will be eligible for state aid. Voila - the state has saved itself money.

you won't be paying HER child support - you will be repaying the state for taking care of your kids because you can't. As long as she is on state support - you will be paying....literally. If you go on state support too, she will end up with an order against her as well.
