Question on 50/50 parent time

Hi guys- My neighbor just asked me how she should handle car insurance for her daughter that is soon to be licensed. I had to tell her that HONESTLY- I know no one that shares time 50/50 . All my friends have conflict..well you know what I mean..

She and her ex get along fine..her daughter spends 2 weeks with one parent and then two weeks with the other..No child support - etc.

So what do they do about insurance? Car insurance that is..

Who puts her on their  policy? They have no problem splitting the cost of the policy but what happens if she is in an accident? Who covers that and takes the hit on their insurance?

Any advise would be appreciated. I will print off your comments and give them to her..She has a few months to think about what to do..

Thanks!

I am not sure if it varies from state to state....but in WI, a licensed driver in the house is automatically added to the insurance policy, so she would have to be on both.

If they are wondering who should pay the policy for a car that the teen drives exclusively, then I would agree with KDB and see who gets the better rate on the additional car and then split the cost. How do they handle things like clothing and medical? I would think that would be similar.

My thoughts would be for them to compare their policies, who would pay the least amount for the same coverage and go from there. As long as they agree on paying 1/2, would make sense to go with the most economical which is a win win for everyone...
