I need picnic games

OK, this is kind of an oddball questiuon.

One of the things I wanted to do, now that I have a new freedom, was get involved in my community more. This was something that my STBX never supported so I'm excited to be able to volunteer now.

For my first volunteer effort, I'm coordinating the kids games at our town festival. So here is the question: Do you have any suggestions for games to lead for the kids.

Here are some of the details

1) the kids will range in age from 2-3 to 10 year olds

2) the festival committee has specifically requested games that get the parents involved.

3) I can expect to have to entertain 75 to 100 kids I'll have other volunteers under me so I can break them into smaller groups.

To get your thoughts started I've been requested to have the traditional "sawdust treasure hunt" as the keystone event. This involves getting one of the lumber mills to dump a truck load of sawdust into a small mountain and hiding many trinkets (we use small toys, mardi gras neclaces, silver dollars etc.) in it. Then let the kids dig into it to find the trinkets.

What about a wheelbarrow race?  Parents hold the kids legs and the kids walk on their hands.  Silly and fun.  Or if thats too much they pull the kids on a sack/cloth.  Or the three legged race.

One of the funnest activities that my Tiger Cubs (1st grade Cub Scouts) loved was a fireman's relay race.  Especially fun if you're outside because you can use water.

I borrowed some old equipment from our local fire station like a 2 helmets, 2 pairs of boots, and 2 coats.  They always had stuff they didn't use anymore and were happy to help.

Divide the group into equal teams keeping each kid with 1 parent.  Each individual has to quickly put on the gear, fill up a small bucket and run with it to the end point where they dump it on "the fire", run back and remove the gear so the next person can go.  The first team finished wins. The kids get such a kick out of watching their parents do this with them and it's hilarious to watch the kids try to move in the oversized gear.

A baby pool at each end that both teams use will keep the water moving.  When one end starts to get low, just move to the other end to start the next session.

How about the waterballoon toss. Break the kids into pairs of 2. Give each a water filled balloon. Each team faces each other about 3 ft. apart and throws it to the other teammate. If successfull they both take a step backwards from oneanother until no one has a filled balloon left. A fun game that the parents will enjoy as well.

I like cherbears' idea.  I used to love potato sack races!

If it's going to be at a park, maybe a i spy game (I spy a bird, give them cards to see how many items they can find) or a treasure hunt.

There is the old fashioned egg toss or egg in the spoon races.

You can't go wrong with a dunk tank. Maybe you can get your ex to sit in it for a while.
Way to get involved!
