Between a rock and a hard place...

Hi, Am new to this group. I've been divorced for three years and am mom to two teens, one which is in college. I have just had my 'day in court' for bankruptcy. I am currently getting Unemployment; I should be on DSS benefits as I have filed for SSD d/t multiple health issues. because of my very limited income, I am behind on rent and car payments. Ex has helped out where he can, as have my family members. Still, without a doubt, I am facing eviction. Needless to say, this is affecting my kids big-time. I can't sleep...I'm a wreck. Any words of wisdom?

Sorry, Delia...I can't work as long as I'm applying for SSD. You're either disabled and unable to work(me...), or you are willing, able and ready to work. I've been receiving Unemployment up until recently, but I need to apply for social services benefits to keep me going until the SSD comes in...when it comes in. But, DSS can't pay me what I need to stay here...Yeah, I definitely feel like throwing in the towel :(

Yeah, I do have an attorney working with me on the SSD. He told me that he thought I had an 80% chance of getting the disability benefits, due to my ripe old age of 55 :)   But, he is there to help, if needed. I belive that what will happen is I'll have to move into the house my ex is rehabbing...not an ideal situation, mind you, but better than nothing. I reallly want to stay put, where I am, but I'm not sure it will be the best option, in the long run. Perhaps once I get the disability, and get on my feet, I'll be in a position to find another place of my own or a rental. Of course, finding someone who will rent to me will be the problem. I've decided to be pro-active, but take one day at a time. Not sure I can handle more than that. Also, found out yesterday, that...two weeks after the fact...I have no more health insurance for me and the kids. So, that is the first thing I have to address tomorrow. Gee, I feel screwed all around!

I'm not sure what your disability is, so this may not be an option, but I applied today for a Census job. They usually pay at least 13.50 an hour plus mileage if you have a car. It's flexible, so you could work 3 12 hour days, 4 10 hour days, spread it out over a full 7 days a week, as long as it adds up to 40 a week. The testing is super easy, and if you qualify for a supervisory position, that pays over $15 an hour (even here in podunk usa...larger cities pay more). The job usually lasts 2-3 months depending on which position you hold.

Check out census.gov and search to see if they are doing hiring in your area. Like I said, it may not be an option for you but it's worth checking out!

have you looked into public assistance for housing in order to keep a roof over your head?

do you have an attorney helping you with your SSD? If not, and this was your first attempt at getting disabiliy, bear in mind you are probably going to get turned down. 99% of all who file do, it's how they weed out people who are looking to abuse the system. It's a lot of paperwork and a lot of red tape - and it will take quite a bit of time. An attorney who specializes in helping obtain benefits might be a good idea to look into - you don't pay them upfront, they take a small portion of your benefit upon approval.

What about selling things to try to get money to pay your rent? TV, computer, jewlery, etc - at this point I think keeping a roof over your head would be more important that material items - you can always replace when things get better...

what about babysitting? make some extra money caring for other people's children? Or helping someone elderly?

You can wind up in eviction court but still be able to keep your home if you can come up with the money, bring it to court with you,  and prove the hardship it would cause if you lost it.
