Divorce process. Do I need a lawyer or is it just a recommendation?

Is it possible for two people to set up their own divorce without going through lawyers or mediation?

My wife hired a lawyer and he did all the paperwork.  I elected not to, thought were able to be mature enough to be reasonable.
Have to admit, it was pretty scary to be a "regular guy" going up against a big shot ($5k retainer) lawyer.  I managed to do pretty well but I worked my a** off, reading and learning.  In the end, she ended up no better than she would have by us doing it on our own.  What a waste of $5k!  She sees it too, but wont admit it.
My advice, if you go it alone....  Do your homework, be prepared.  Keep emotion out of it at all times!  Nothing personal, just business must be your mindset.
Good luck!

yes, it's possible.  people do this, via online forms or even with legal aid.....but usually when it is amicable...and it's not confusing...

meaning...no kids, property, assets/debts, etc.

if you have any issues that need to be resolved, a lawyer or mediator is the way to go.
