New boyfriend birthday gift?

I have been seeing a new guy for about 2 weeks, by the time his birthday rolls around we will have been seeing each other for a month.

We are really into each other and at this point I don't have any reason to believe that we won't be seeing each other in a few weeks.

I want to get him a small birthday gift, but I don't him well enough to get something truly thoughtful and inexpensive.

His main hobbies are running and reading history books. That doesn't exactly inspire creative ideas.

If anybody has any ideas I would really appreciate it.

I was thinking more along the lines of one of those little animal-themed g-strings where his doohickey fits into the trunk of an elephant or something...never mind, forget it...

Not really an answer, but under the great Differences Between Sexes topic, it strikes me that women want something thoughtful in gifts, but men want something useful.  Of course that is too pat and limiting but I would say there's some truth to it

....well good luck, and agreed, Spaz's gift suggestion is King Solomon-like in its febrile perspicacity....

Seriously, if you live in a cold area, then he needs an endless supply of running socks.  Smartwool running socks are the spine of every runner's Christmas stocking list.  I forget the brand-name, but I've run across some really neat gloves and socks--they warm by a couple degrees when moist.  I've found those two degrees wonderful when running down in the 20s.  A boutique store should know about it.

Also, if you could find out what particular historical periods or topics really float his boat, then consider heading to a few used bookstores to see what is out there.  That would say a lot to me.  if you don't know, then i think Spaz's idea is great.

Let us know what you do and how it goes!

MAKE him dinner, have a nice bottle of wine on the table and give him a giftcard to borders stuck in a running sock...
