Protection from medical (nursing home)

We are an elderly couple who just make it each month.  In Minnesota would a divorce keep the assets safe if one of us went to a nursing home or had large medical bills.  The divorce would not change our living together.

problem with your idea is that MN requires you to live seperate and apart for at least 180 days prior to filing - and proof of the breakdown of the marriage. Continuing to live together would not be an option.
