How Did You Tell Your Children?

My children, unfortunately, had to  witness my ex's big scene when he left.

How did you tell your children you were separating?

I initiated.. he did not want to leave. He wanted to have the big serious talk... They are 3 & 5 yrs old. I started before he did. I asked them how they would feel about having Mommy/ girls time all to ourselves one weekend and Daddy/girls time all to themselves another weekend. They were excited for that. Then I asked if it would be ok with them if Daddy slept in a different house but they still got to see him as much as they wanted.. I gave examples like he would pick them up from school on some days and they can call and talk to him whenever they wanted. They seemed to take it well. I think as long as we appear to them as if we are ok with it even though we are not, then the children will be ok. He agreed. I hope he continues to listen and work with me.

I'm having a hard time with this question also.  He's still living here while the divorce in in precess.  The kids may have an idea, but to say one won't be living in the house anymore, to me is pretty devastating.  I'm not sure what to do.

I had no problem with telling mine. It was a second marriage for me and he was not their dad. They were actually relieved because of all of the stupid things he was doing and problems he was causing.
Now..telling them their dad had been killed..was a WHOLE different story!
