Check their credentials by going to your local or state bar association.  This well tell you at least if your lawyer has the appropriate experience for your needs.  However, it seems that you are more concerned about cost and process.  Consider finding an attorney who works within the collaborative divorce process, this can provide more structure.  Go to IACP.org to find a practice in your area.  Also, consider using an attorney who is also a family mediator.  Disucss with your counselor not what you should get, but the process they use to get it.
