Divorce and ruined credit

I just filed for divorce but have been separated almost a year. I am 120 days late on all my outstanding debt (personal credit cards, ect.) I can pay everything off upon my divorce settlement, which should take 90 days max. However, in the mean time, my credit rating is going down the drain. I intend to purshase a home when this is over, but I think I am wrecking a once excellent credit history. Do you have any suggestions about how I might handle this?

i would definitely call the lenders and explain, they will be not fun calls, but you really should try. they will try and really squeeze you, but in the end, i believe it will potentially delay the process a bit - move quickly - im no expert, but the card companies have the reputation of being MUCH easier than the collection agencies, who can be really tough. i once got a call from a collector (i was really late) it literally sent chills down my spine....

Yes. first off call your lawyer and ask about this. If you have already started the paperwork, why can't you pay off your debts? Second, call the creditors directly and explain what is happening. Third, call a credit counseling (non profit) agency and see if they can assist you here.
