To Tell the Little Ones or Not?

Our girls are 5 and my ex has remained in the UK while we have returned to the US. The girls think Daddy is working and living in London and will be home when the job ends, which was true until we decided to divorce. He tells me not to tell them anything and to continue wearing my ring....How long do I keep this up and when am I free to tell others about my situation and let the girls know that Daddy will not be moving back home with us?? Any advice is appreciated, thanks.

It is better that you sit your children down and tell them right away. They need to know the trueth but also it is very important that you let them know that it was not there fault. Almost 2 years ago I was served with papers the following week we sat our 5 year old down and told him that mommy and daddy will no longer live in the same house together. Mommy and daddy fought to much and we thought that it would be in the best for you and your baby brother to live apart. I also got my son into counseling because it really affected him. Tell them now before they hear you on the phone talking about it. Most important don't put their father down in front of them it.

I agree. Find some quiet time to sit down and talk to them about it. It's better to handle it that way, than for them to find out "accidentally" through somebody else. Be honest and loving, and they will be fine, and you'll be better too. secrets fester.

i would suggest that you tell your children the truth as soon as possible. it won't be easy, but as barkley says, honesty will ultimately result in a better life for all. good luck.

Honesty is the Best Policy.. is what my mom always told me. If this marriage is really over then you need to move on and show your kids what a happy marriage is really like. This is not how you want them to think a mommy and daddy really live. Kids are much smarter than we think, I am sure they know a little bit about what is going on.. you also need to be honest with yourself and your new friends so you can move on and be happy
