I'll repeat what 2much and Blueb said.... those keystroke recording programs hide in the OS, so the best thing to do is to save off your personal documents (word documents, etc) AFTER checking them for viruses, and then get some local guru to wipe your hard drive --- not just re-install the OS--- REFORMAT the hard drive and THEN install the OS.

If they just to a re-install, some of the old files could be left behind....

I had pretty decent luck with the Geek Squad at my local BestBuy.  They weren't the cheapest but they did the job.  If you explain your concerns they will offer recommendations for free (probably wipe the hard drive) - at least mine did!

There is a program out there that, if installed on your computer, literally does record everything you do...your keystrokes, which websites you visit, and allows him to see this all in real time.  I actually considered getting it when I discovered my stbx was first cheating on me...thought better of it later, but if he installed a program like that on your computer before he left and you haven't wiped your harddrive, it likely is still there.

I'm with 2much...back up essential files and wipe the harddrive...if you can't do it yourself, take it into a computer shop.  After you've done that, change ALL your passwords...if you can borrow a friend's computer to do it before taking the 'puter into the shop, all the better...if he does have all your passwords to everywhere...including this site, your financials, etc. he might screw with it and change the passwords himself while your computer is out of commission, in which case, you won't be able to log in after you get your 'puter back!  But, you can't log onto your computer with the new passwords before you take it in...it would defeat the purpose as he would be able to get the new password!

I wish you the best of luck with all this...be safe!

Could he have planted some remote access software on the machine before he left?  If you want to know for certain, and make sure he can't get back in, you really should take it to a computer shop and have them check it out and reinstall the OS if necessary.

Also, make sure you change your passwords on all of your online accounts, like email, and web banking.

I had to set my computer so that when it goes to screensaver, you have to log back in with a password. He was still living in the house when I did that and he got really mad. I know he got into my accounts.
Even though he is finally out of the house, I still have the computer password protected that way, because I know he asks the kids to get information from time to time. Rather than put them in a position where they have to make a choice, this makes it impossible for them to do it.

I never had that problem with my ex  He couldn't even turn a computer on.  Some good programs to check out are Malwarebytes anti-malware, Ad Aware, AVG Antivirus, Zone Alarm is a good firewall.   Hijack this is good but can be difficult to understand.

If you still think your ex has access then copy all of your important documents and pictures to a usb stick or other back up device and format and reinstall your operating system.

I work on computers for a living so if there is anything else I can do for you just shoot me an email.

I use passwords that my ex would never connect with me. If I have a repairman at the house I will use his name or company name. The name of the post master where my post office box is located. Old phone numbers with the initials for states I have lived in. I've quit using the horses for my passwords. He knew I used those often. So I can't do that anymore.

Any security questions. I make up answers. I have to log onto my computer with a password.

This happened to me with the x's new wife. She hacked into all our accounts including my children's emails. I took it up with My state's Attorney General's office, computer division. He told me if they send you an email it could have a spyware kind of program in it. I'd see what they thought. It is against the law.

I had to change all my passwords, and believe me finding random passwords that they couldn't figure out was tough. I have since gotten an additional security program that hunts for all spyware every day. You can do your own search finding one on the internet that will scan your computer. It's something to look into. Good Luck.

Change ALL your passwords and set your FB privacy to really private, so that only friends or only specific users can see your profile. Block him and any other users you don't want reading your stuff.

I would also contact your ISP and find out whether he has email or ownership on the account. Some ISPs provide free virus protection as part of your internet service; find out about that and run it.

There are keystroke programs that collect your info and when my husband left and my various accounts were compromised, and then again when a bunch of my email turned up in the divorce declaration, I found a strange log file in one of his old folders. I deleted it and wish I hadn't because I'm sure it was how he got into my private accounts. I have no idea what it was.

I think this is a little easier to fix. Just block the *shit* out of anyone connected to him on FB, and set your FB profile to super private, almost to the point of not being there at all. Stay in touch with your friends and family via telephone.

There are some applications that will allow a person to record key strokes and store them in a text file. Also if windows xp/2000, under control panel, in the system icon, in the remote tab, there is an option for remote desktop. If th machine is one and he knows your password, when you aren't there he can sign on as you and go through your machine without you even knowing it. Look up your history among other things. Turn that option off. Also if he has a user id on the machine, remove that. Check for an application called pcanywhere as well as log me in which allows users to get access to there machines.

Facebook you would have to set up as private so that noone unless listed as a friend could have access to your page and view it. Also change your passwords frequently and use a mixture of upper case, lowercase numbers and symbols to create a secure password.

Hope this helps you some

Have you turned all this over to your atty. and to the local police? That is definitley stalking. I know you can deny remote access to your computer. I don't allow remote access to any of my computers.

Maybe one of the guys can tell you more. You can take it in and let someone more knowledgeable look at it. He could have put a program on there you don't know about. You would have to know what you are looking for to find it.

This had been going on for some time. I remember you mentioning it before.
