I learned my lesson a long time ago the hard way, as an attorney, I DO NOT give out my cell, home number or personal e-mail to clients, and ensure that I'm unlisted.
Why?
Because, inevitably, a client would call or e-mail me and absolutely ruin my holiday. Demanding I "DO SOMETHING" right then and there. Ok, yeah, I'll call the judge on memorial day to resolve the fact your prick ex fed little johnny a regular oscar meyer weiner when you don't approve of any kind that isn't 100% beef....let me drop all the plans I had with my family to handle your pett - I mean "important issue"....they won't mind since it's you.
It's bad enough the night before I go back to the office after a holiday I'm already filled with angst as to what I'm going to have to deal with.
People, for the love of pete, don't blow up your attorney's phone or e-mail if an issue comes up over a holiday that didn't end up in someone being arrested or hospitalized. One call, one e-mail - that's all you need...it will get handled (if warranted) ...on a case by case basis based on the level of the "injury" (sounds like the ER waiting room policy, doesn't it?)
BTW - the hot dog story...real...happened this past weekend - I had a combined total of 27 messages about it from my client between voice mail & e-mail. Kid has no allergies, there are no restrictions to diet either by a dr or in the custody agreement...diva just didn't get her way...
I did resist the urge to tell her where, exactly, to shove the hot dog...but she got an earful from me about what constitutes a legal issue and what doesn't.
Don't become "that" client people, the more you blow up your attorney's messages, the less important of a client you become....attorneys have lives outside of the office & courtroom..."retained" doesn't mean owned 24/7....
