In the past week alone, the media has brought us the Christie Brinkley story, the news about A-Rod, and the allegedly untrue news about Madonna. The world went crazy when Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston split and he left the country to adopt children with Angelina Jolie. We go ga-ga for couples like Will Smith and Jada Pinkett-Smith who seem like they can bypass the celebrity divorce circuit and really make their marriage last. It all seems so trite though, since the truth is that we don't really know any of these people at all. So the question remains: why are we so invested in celebrity divorces?
Some might say that we love to see celebrities, who often think their you-know-what don't stink, get knocked down a peg. Really Sienna Miller, you think you're the cat's meeyow? Well guess what, your husband is boffing the baby-sitter.
But I disagree; I have more faith in us regular people.
I may not be a specialist in the area but I do have an opinion. For some reason I still don't understand, us regular people tend to put celebs on some type of pedestal. We envy them: their attractiveness, their money, etc. And when we see these air-brushed, perfected people going through very normal average-person problems, it knocks them down to our level. When the truth is that they never really left.
It's important not to judge though, if you ask me, because all of us here go through the treacherous trials and tribulations of divorce every day; it would be sheer hell if that pain were broadcast for the entire world to see.
