The Biologist and I are Taking a Break... or Maybe More Than That?

It might be a temporary break. It might be permanent.

This probably won’t come as any surprise to you, considering, um, the trials (I just wrote “trails,” but yes, those, too) we’ve been through up until this point.

I need to be careful about what I say here. Not only do I fear hurting his feelings — but his friends and house mate read this blog, too.

He has asked me not to write about some of the deep, emotional conflicts. So, I won’t. Or, I’ll try not to anyway.

The biggest reason we’re not working (for me) is: the distance. I’ve always known that I’m not very good at long distance relationships. In fact, I’m horrible at them. He’s lives an hour and a half away. No biggie, if I were single. But you add the “mom” part, and you get the picture. I’ve never been to his home, I’ve never met his friends. I’ve never seen where he sleeps.

As I lay there last week, feeling the depths of the UTI — followed by the kidney infection — it only proved how far away he lives. I was quite vulnerable — okay, I was downright distressed — and he wasn’t here. He was working, he was busy. My life stared me straight in the face again: you can put this whole thing behind you and get on with your life, your little girl needs you, YOU need you. May this be a lesson in taking care of yourself when the storm hits and takes down all the trees.

I got attached. The deal about attachment is that when you detach, you need to deal with the sadness and disappointment that comes along with it. Know what I mean?

I told one of my girlfriends I’m afraid to try again with the Biologist. I’m not blaming him, but wouldn’t you feel a little scared to go back?

“He already led you into poison oak,” my girlfriend joked. “And now your urinary tract, followed by your kidneys. What’s next? Gangrene in your legs?”

Thanks Su Yin! Very poignant re: the mom and the girlfriend roles. True.

I've found myself in a very similar place Rachel. Not the long distance relationship but that moment that you are laying in bed with (insert any health issue that makes you feel crappy here) and you realize... I'm by myself. Sure, there are dates and a general sense of "relationship" but if you are by yourself at that moment it's all just superficial. The Mom thing makes it hard, believe me I know but really it's who you are and what your real life is about. Like Su Yin said you will be two people, the mom and the girlfriend and who really wants that?

Long distance is tough. My wife and I did it the entire time we were dating (4+yrs)!  The hard part for us was after we were married - and finally in same city - it was not as "special" - our time together had gone from infrequent (read - special) to very very frequent (and very less special!).

stuff we used to never fight about - we suddenly fought about. (little stuff like what movie to see or where to eat - when you see someone 2x month, and you finally do see them, you dont care where you eat, but when you see 'em every day, um.....)

It was a tough year or so till we got it on track!!!

I'm laughed at your last sentence.  Your girlfriend has a point.  Although for me it would not be so much the gangrene, okay maybe because I need my legs (to chase after the kids)... but seriously, I would be more concerned about the distance.  Like you said, it is okay when you're single and alone but with a child everything changes.  Not knowing where he lives and not knowing his friends -- that doesn't really make for a good long-lasting relationship.  You will end up splitting yourself into two people -- the mom and the girlfriend.  It's tough enough doing that when both of the people who need you are w/in shouting distance imagine your situation.  Good luck.  I know this is hard.
