Your Wedding Rings: Now What?

Wedding and/or engagement rings are the quintessential symbols of your marriage and the eternal, unbreakable (ha) bond between husband and wife. Now that you are divorced (or about to be), what should you do with them?

On the popular television show Sex and the City, Charlotte had one heck of a time letting go of her ring once she and her husband were divorced. Long after the papers had been signed, she would still find herself wearing the ring, in secret, of course. She eventually let her best friend Carrie sell the ring--Carrie needed the money, and Charlotte needed to let go. It was a win-win situation.

I don't know what my ex-husband did with his ring. He had stopped wearing it several weeks before he filed for divorce. I can only imagine where it went; he claimed it had been lost. Yeah, sure.

Me? Okay, I'm a "Charlotte". I wore my rings for a long time after he left me. At first I wore both rings; after awhile I took the wedding ring off and put it away. When anyone asked me why I was still wearing my engagement ring, I said it was because it's pretty. Naturally, that was a half-truth; yes, it was a pretty ring, but I also just wasn't ready to let go of it.

I was still wearing my ex-husband's engagement ring well into my next relationship. It bothered him, but he didn't really mention it, at least not to me. After awhile, as I grew more serious in the new relationship, I became bothered by it too. And I took the ring off, never to be placed upon my finger again.

You know what I did with it? I sold it on eBay, along with the wedding ring, for significantly more than he had originally paid for it. Score!

Am I advocating hocking your rings when you get a divorce? Absolutely; why not get over it while putting some money in your pocket at the same time? Whenever you're ready to take them off, eBay will be there waiting.
