Would You Divorce Your Spouse If You Were Jailed?

A Jewish man and his wife were in court.  She wanted a divorce. He didn't.  The court gave him some jail time to change his mind.

According to ynetnews.com, the man and his wife had been separated for years. During that time, he'd grown closer to his faith.  When they tried to reconcile, the wife found that she could no longer relate to him or the customs he embraced.  She asked for a divorce.

To the husband's surprise, the Jewish court gave it to her. They said that since he had become devout during the marriage, it wasn't something that she had planned on marrying into.   When the Husband refused to accept the decision, he was arrested and sent to jail.

After spending days behind bars, and hours with a rabbi, the man relented.  He granted the divorce.  The question now, is did he truly repent, or just let go because he didn't want to be punished? One could ask a similar question of the wife: did she give up because she lacked the faith, or just because she viewed her marriage as a punishment?
