So I did an interesting writing exercise last night. First, I wrote down all of my regrets in life. Then, I wrote down all of my negative beliefs and fears about myself in the following categories (you have to write at least 4 in each category): self, health, relationships, money, family, abilities, creativity and then just general stuff.
Then I put those aside and wrote down every pearl of wisdom I have as a result of my life experiences. I wrote down my hopes, dreams and joys in life.
Finally, I wrote a letter to myself from the universe (or it could be from the divine if you are a believer). The letter ended up being mostly about hope and faith in the path that I am on.
It was an interesting experience, very calming to put a voice not just to the fears and disappointments, but to the learning and joy that has occured along the way. The letter to myself was like a pep talk from the universe or from my own wisdom and experience. It doesn't fix anything immediately, but it gave me a sense of clarity and peace with the past. I really recommend it for anyone that is struggling with the dramatic changes in their life that the end of a relationship brings.
We all have regrets and negative records in our heads, but we also all have wisdom and joy that we sometimes forget to catalogue. I am going to try to give at least equal time to that side of the equation moving forward.
